Mac News and Rumors for March 4th

This week, we’ll talk about the iPhone 4 and leaked information about the iPhone 5.  We’ll also talk about the details behind Intel’s new Thunderbolt port and address rumors regarding Phil Hellmuth joining ESPN’s team.

Verizon iPhone Antenna Still Sub-Par

Consumer Reports declined to recommend the iPhone 4 over antenna issues that Apple CEO Steve Jobs refused to admit even existed.  This time around, with Apple saying that the Verizon edition has reworked the antenna issue, Consumer Reports is once again holding firm.  According to the tests, even placing one finger on the gap at the lower left side of the device caused it to have signal loss over a period of 15 seconds.

Thunderbolt Details

Many of us were very excited to hear about Intel’s new Thunderbolt port, which does everything in one small slot and offers a 10 GB per second connection speed.  One port could handle high-speed data transfer or output to a high-definition monitor.  Some of the interesting notes about Thunderbolt were uncovered by CNet, which said that despite its speed, the port only takes up 10 watts of power, which is only slightly more than a USB.

Carbon Fiber Body for iPad 2?

In another feature leaked for the iPad 2, it’s widely being reported that it will offer a carbon fiber body.  It was first reported three years ago that Apple was looking into this technology for its MacBook Air line as well as possibility putting it into place for a tablet computer, which later became the iPad.  This time, we might see it in the iPad 2, which would greatly reduce the device’s weight.

Mac OS X Lion Features

Apple released the first developer preview of Mac OS X Lion.  In it, the company added support for a separate recovery partition and will allow the new system to boot to it without an operating system disc.  In addition, Apple has added TRIM, which includes support for optimization of solid-state drives by cleaning up unused blocks of data and prepping them for rewriting.  Finally, it appears that Mac OS X Lion requires a minimum of an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

iPhone 5 Rumors Ramp Up

With all the Apple fanboys churning out rumors about the iPad 2, an iPhone 5 announcement isn’t far away.  The first major feature leak for the new phone is that its screen will be slightly bigger – a full four inches in fact – and it will be “edge to edge.”  The iPhone 5 is expected to launch on both AT&T and Verizon in a few months.

Phil Hellmuth to be Added to WSOP ESPN Team?

Matt Savage posted on TwoPlusTwo that former UB.com pro Phil Hellmuth might be in line to join ESPN’s broadcast team at the World Series of Poker.  There have been quite a few changes in poker commentators lately, including Norm Macdonald replacing Gabe Kaplan on GSN’s “High Stakes Poker.”  According to Savage, Hellmuth would potentially be a part of a three-person team, along with Lon McEachern and Norman Chad.
