Mac News and Rumors for November 8th

 

Another week and we have several interesting announcements and developments from Apple.  There’s news about an honor bestowed upon Steve Jobs as well as a seeded update for Snow Leopard.  For those of you running Windows on your Mac via Parallels, there’s an important announcement below as well.  Finally, we haven’t heard any announcements from Full Tilt Poker about new November promotions, but PokerStars has information about the Turbo Takedown and Battle of the Planets.

Apple’s Steve Jobs Named CEO of the Decade

Fortune Magazine named Apple CEO Steve Jobs the “CEO of the Decade” through his efforts in remaking several industries and moving Apple through troubled times with increased profitability.  In the article at Fortune, there is an interactive timeline of his tenure at Apple and a set of rare photos of Jobs over the years.  There’s a series of testimonials and a recap of the top 10 moments in his career, giving homage to one of the most compelling CEOs in modern times.

Update to Snow Leopard Seeded to Developers

Reports have been confirmed that Apple has released Mac OS X 10.6.2 to developers.  This release comes one week after 10.6.1 was released.  Apple has not listed any known issues with this new build, but about six areas are different from the previous edition.  These include fixes for AirPort issues with the latest iMac models and issues affecting graphics cards interacting with AppleTV.

Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac Released

Parallels announced the launch of Desktop 5 for Mac, which is an updated edition of the virtualization software.  Parallels allows users to run Windows operating systems alongside Mac OS X.  This update brings 70 new features along with the promises of significant performance enhancements.  Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac is $79.99, with upgrade pricing available at $49.99 for current users.

100,000 Apps are Now Available

Apple announced on Wednesday that there are more than 100,000 applications available from the App Store.  Apple’s previous announcement in this arena was when the application store surpassed two billion downloads with 85,000 apps available.

PokerStars Rolls Out November Promotions

While there has been absolutely nothing on the promotional front for Full Tilt Poker, there have been some announcements from PokerStars.  The Turbo Takedown is a monthly Frequent Player Point (FPP) tournament with a million dollar prize pool.  The winner of that tournament will also get a slick Audi TT.  The buy-in is 3,000 FPPs and all of the pros that participate will have bounties on them if eliminated.  In addition, the Battle of the Planets features special celebration that will have double prize pools from November 8th to 21st on top of cash prizes for players that break any leaderboard record.
